My process is rooted in an ever-expanding catalogue of automatic drawings and doodles that I make both in and outside of the studio. The drawings are important source material and a starting point for the paintings. My interest in the invention in the drawings and the lack of clarity in their subject or narrative propels a deeper search through the making of a painting. To conjure the image, I draw on historical and contemporary imagery, high and low culture, and a sense of distorted normalcy. I often discover images and ideas by both destabilizing a direct message and directly conveying something that is unclear.
